Women in Coding

Providing affordable coding classes for women in the community

Women in Coding was started in early 2016 by Zoe Koulouris and Kseniya Lifanova. Our mission is to provide resources and opportunities for those interested in coding and design in the local community.

Although this group is geared towards women, anyone is welcome to attend our classes.

We host affordable monthly classes as well as casual events for people to network and connect. Please see below for our next class.

Version Control with Git and Github

Have you ever made changes that broke your code and been unable to remember how things used to work? Would you like to collaborate with other developers/designers on a project without worrying about who is making changes to which file? Version control, and git in particular, can solve these and many other problems!

Saving your codebase in Git is like a super power. It enables you to go back to previous versions of your code, try out ideas and easily throw them away, work with others around the globe, contribute to open source software, and much more. It's useful whether you are working on a large distributed team or working on smaller personal projects.

This class will introduce the basics of version control, how to use Git to keep track of your changes to a project, and how to use GitHub (a social code hosting service) to collaborate with other developers.

Students should have a working knowledge of HTML and JavaScript. Familiarity with other JavaScript frameworks will be beneficial, but is not required. Please bring a laptop with a text editor (Sublime Text 3 is recommended) and Chrome installed.

Build a JavaScript Game with PixiJS

Computer programming is neat, but what can you actually do with it today? Drawing an interactive 2D game is a good way to see understandable and interesting results, and these days it's easier than ever. We'll use PixiJS to build a complete engine for a 2D platformer game, along the way learning programming concepts.

Class Breakdown:

  • Session 1: Drawing on the canvas and handling input controls
  • Session 2: Managing the game state and building levels
  • Session 3: Hazards, points, and "AI"
  • Session 4: Polish and adding fun stuff

If you have been to one of our previous Javascript classes or know some basics and want to build something fun, this class is for you. We will utilize Github in this class so it will be helpful (not required) if you attend our Github class, that way you can practice what you learn!
